1.      寝耳に水 – ねみみにみず- ne mimi ni mizu! – it means being completely surprised or the feeling of being surprised when you suddenly learn that something unexpected has happened.

The word originates from the sound of water when someone is sleeping. Imagine you are deep asleep and suddenly water comes in your ears or you hear an alarm or some sound about flood warning. You will be shocked or surprised right! 

2.      青天の霹靂 - せいてんのへきれき – seitennohekireki – This expression refers to the sudden occurrence of unexpected events, like the sound of thunder that suddenly occurs in a clear blue sky.  Similar proverb in English is “A bolt out of the blue”
