Let’s see some fun expressions with the word “Unagi” – ウナギ- Eel
1. うなぎの寝床-
うなぎのねどこ-
unagi no nedoko – literally means Eels bed, however this expression means something
else in modern time.
Eels prefer narrow places like crevices between
rocks. As a type of eel fishing, there is a method of setting up bamboo pipes
for eels to use as a habitat, and the term ``eel bed'' is used to describe a
narrow and long room that eels prefer.
Like eel’s bed this is an analogy for a building or place
that has a narrow entrance and is deep inside. Also referred to as a back-row house or
a long, narrow, and cramped place.
2.うなぎ登り-うなぎのぼり- unaginobori - sudden rise in numbers, status, popularity, etc.
The way the eel moves upwards in the river, or the way the
eel slithers upward after being caught by hand, this expression is used to show
sudden rise.
