å¯ã-neru means to Sleep.
1. ãããå¯ - utatane - to doze off - Uta refers to "utouto-ãã¨ãã¨" one of the onomatopoeia in Japanese, which means "looking tired and sleepy".

2. į¸å¯å Ĩã - Tanukineiri - Pretending to sleep - Tanuki (Racoon) are said to be very sensitive and they loose their consciousness if taken by surprise. They look like sleeping. Racoons are known to trick humans. Hence the word sleeping like Tanuki (Racoon), pretending to sleep.
