2. 狸寝入り - Tanukineiri - Pretending to sleep - Tanuki (Racoon) are said to be very sensitive and they loose their consciousness if taken by surprise. They look like sleeping. Racoons are known to trick humans. Hence the word sleeping like Tanuki (Racoon), pretending to sleep.
先生に叱られそうになると彼はいつも狸寝入りする。- He always pretends to sleep when his teacher is about to scold him.
彼は都合が悪くなるとすぐ狸寝入りする。- He pretends to sleep as soon as things get bad.
