1.   あおは　あいより　いでて　あいより　あおし- it means “The student has become the master”. The concept behind this expression is, the blue color produced from the Indigo plant is bluer than the plant itself.

青は藍より出でて藍より青し!

2.      青息吐息- あおいきといき- Aoikitoiki – it means deep distress. The concept behind this expression is “Iki” means breathe and “Toiki” means sigh, to breathe in sigh when one is in distress or at their wits end.

3.      紺屋の白袴 – こんやのしろばかま - Konya no shirobakama. Dyer's clothes remain undyed, and the shoemaker goes ill shod.

It means a person is so busy working for others, that they don’t have time for themselves. The concept behind this expression is an indigo dyer was so busy dyeing other people's clothes, that his own clothes remained white.

4.      あおすじをたてる- Aosuji wo tateru – furious about – here “suji” means veins. The concept behind this expression is, the blue veins become visible when someone is furious.
